Custom "Virgile" Library Scene Mechanical Automaton Music Box, made by the studio Atelier Autrefois in Paris, France. The diorama is built upon an inlaid wooden platform base with bun feet and features a detailed scholar's library setting. The scene includes: Central Human Automaton: A porcelain-headed doll figure with a period wig, dressed in traditional 18th-century style attire with lace and ribbon trim. The figure is seated at a writing desk, holding a feather quill pen, and moves in tandem with the music mechanism. Detailed Library Vignette: A miniature wooden bookcase filled with tiny reproduction books, paint tubes, brushes, and sheet music. The lower cabinet doors are functional and open. The desk features miniature desk accessories, including porcelain inkwells, a candelabra, and a small patterned rug underneath. Mechanical and Musical Operation: The piece operates via a mechanical movement wound with the included key. A brass plaque mounted on the front of the wooden base is inscribed "Virgile * 4 / 2000". When wound, the figure animates slowly as the music box plays. Maker: Atelier Autrefois (Paris, France)Model/Series: Virgile * 4Date: 2000.
Condition: Good condition overall. The wooden library structure, cabinetry, and miniature books are intact with minor, age-appropriate surface dust and wear. The figure's textile costume shows no major fading or tearing. The mechanical automaton movement and music box are fully functional, providing smooth animation and clear musical playback. Due to the high number of loose miniatures, delicate elements, and substantial weight, this item is fragile and likely requires specialized shipping. Condition Guide: We list damage, repairs, and wear that we are aware of in each listing. No mention of condition does not necessarily mean the Lot is free of issues. Please view the images as part of the description and if necessary, request a condition report. Below is a general definition of how we rate items.
Excellent: Condition is well above what would be expected for a previously owned item. Never worn, or new with tags, No apparent manufacturing flaws. etc.
Very good condition: Well kept, respectfully handled with minimal wear and tear. May have a minor flaw for example a tiny glaze pop, or a few surface scuffs to the underside of a base.
Good condition: No major issues. Expected normal minor wear for age and use.
Generally good condition: One or more items in a group lot or set may have described and/or photographed issue/s. For example: chip in dinnerware, missing rhinestone/s in costume jewelry group lot.
Fair Condition: Multiple issues but in our opinion, worth salvaging. Repairs or major issues will be detailed in the text and the worst shown in images.
Poor Condition: The lot shouldn't be there. Please notify us.
