Luxury "Louis XIV" Theme Cast Bronze Chess Set and Board, handcrafted in Italy by sculptor Piero Benzoni. The 32 individual playing pieces are created using the traditional lost-wax casting technique and finished with 24k gold and silver plating. The set depicts 17th-century European historical figures dressed in ornate musketeer-style regalia, including wide-brimmed feathered hats, tunics, and rapiers. One opposing army features gold bodies with silver accents, while the other features silver bodies with gold accents. The knights are modeled as rearing horses. Pieces are individually signed with the "Piero Benzoni" script mark. The set includes its original, heavy square marble board composed of white, tan, and copper-colored marble squares. The board is mounted within a highly detailed, relief-cast metal frame terminating in four figural rearing horse corner legs. Condition: Good vintage condition overall. All 32 playing pieces are present and structurally sound. The gold and silver plating retains a bright finish with light, localized surface wear, minor oxidation, and natural age-appropriate tarnish to the crevices. The heavy marble board is intact with no major cracks or chips to the playing squares. The relief-cast metal border and figural horse legs are stable. Due to the high weight of the marble and cast metal, special handling or third-party shipping is required. If shipping, please contact one of our shippers for a quote before bidding.
Condition Guide: We list damage, repairs, and wear that we are aware of in each listing. No mention of condition does not necessarily mean the Lot is free of issues. Please view the images as part of the description and if necessary, request a condition report. Below is a general definition of how we rate items.
Excellent: Condition is well above what would be expected for a previously owned item. Never worn, or new with tags, No apparent manufacturing flaws. etc.
Very good condition: Well kept, respectfully handled with minimal wear and tear. May have a minor flaw for example a tiny glaze pop, or a few surface scuffs to the underside of a base.
Good condition: No major issues. Expected normal minor wear for age and use.
Generally good condition: One or more items in a group lot or set may have described and/or photographed issue/s. For example: chip in dinnerware, missing rhinestone/s in costume jewelry group lot.
